Android Safe Mode: How to Find an App That Is Causing Problems

Is your Android phone suddenly freezing, restarting or showing pop-ups, and you do not know why? A single downloaded app is often the cause. Safe Mode starts your phone with only its original system apps, so you can test whether a downloaded app is behind the problem. This guide explains how to enter Safe Mode, what to test and how to get back to normal.

Key takeaways

  • Safe Mode temporarily disables apps you installed; your data stays safe.
  • If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is the likely cause.
  • Remove recently installed apps one at a time to find it.
  • Restart the phone normally to leave Safe Mode.

What Safe Mode does

In Safe Mode, Android loads only the apps that came with the phone. Apps you downloaded are paused, their widgets disappear and the words Safe mode appear at the bottom of the screen. Nothing is deleted; everything returns when you restart normally.

When Safe Mode is useful

How to start Safe Mode

The method on most Android phones, including Pixel and Samsung:

  1. Press and hold the power button (on some phones, power + volume up) until the power menu appears.
  2. Touch and hold Power off (or Restart on some models).
  3. When asked “Reboot to safe mode”, tap OK.
  4. After restarting, check that Safe mode appears at the bottom of the screen.

If that does not work: some phones use a different method, such as holding the volume down button while the phone starts. Check your manufacturer’s support site for your model.

What to test in Safe Mode

Use the phone normally for a while, ideally as long as it usually takes for the problem to appear. Watch for:

  • Does the phone still freeze or restart?
  • Do pop-up ads still appear on the home screen?
  • Is the battery draining as fast as before?
  • Does the phone feel faster?

If the problem stops in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is very likely the cause. If it continues, the issue is probably the system or hardware; try a system update or contact the manufacturer.

Find the problem app

  1. Restart the phone normally to leave Safe Mode.
  2. Open Settings > Apps and look at apps installed around the time the problem started.
  3. Uninstall the most recent one.
  4. Use the phone and see whether the problem returns.
  5. Repeat, one app at a time, until the problem is gone. Then reinstall the other apps you need.

Tip: Apps that promise to “clean”, “boost” or “speed up” the phone, and apps from outside Google Play, are common causes of pop-ups and slowdowns. Run a Play Protect scan too.

How to exit Safe Mode

Simply restart the phone. On most phones it starts normally and your apps return. If it keeps starting in Safe Mode, check that a volume button is not stuck, and remove a tight phone case that may be pressing it.

FAQs

Will Safe Mode delete my data?

No. Safe Mode only pauses downloaded apps. Your files, photos and apps remain.

Can I uninstall apps while in Safe Mode?

Yes. That is often the easiest way to remove an app that misbehaves in normal mode.

Why are my widgets gone after Safe Mode?

Widgets from downloaded apps may need to be added back to the home screen after restarting.
